October 17th USDA Illinois Crop Progress and Condition Report

thHarvest activities continue across the state. Statewide, the average temperature was 59.6 degrees, 3.7 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 0.34 inches, 0.17 inches below normal. There were 5.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending October 16. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 7 percent short, 84 percent adequate, and 8 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 6 percent short, 86 percent adequate, and 7 percent surplus. Corn harvest was 73 percent complete, compared to 81 percent last year. Soybeans dropping leaves increased to 97 percent, compared to 95 percent for the 5-year average. Soybean harvest was 58 percent complete, compared to 81 percent last year. Soybean condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 14 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 24 percent excellent. Winter wheat planted reached 43 percent, compared to 50 percent for the 5-year average. Winter wheat emerged was at 14 percent, compared to 27 percent last year. Pasture and range condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 57 percent good, and 16 percent excellent.
