July 18th USDA Illinois Crop Progress and Condition Report

thOverall, a good week weather wise for much of the State with a few reports of wind damage to corn from severe weather midweek. Spraying for weeds and insects are the major field activities right now. Statewide, the average temperature was 76.1 degrees, 0.1 degree below normal. Precipitation averaged 1.07 inches, 0.37 inches above normal. There were 4.6 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending July 17. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 9 percent short, 80 percent adequate, and 10 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 11 percent short, 83 percent adequate, and 5 percent surplus. Corn silking reached 77 percent, compared to 69 percent last year. Corn dough was at 5 percent, compared to 12 percent for the 5-year average. Corn condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 3 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 22 percent excellent. Soybeans blooming was at 60 percent, compared to 49 percent last year. Soybeans setting pods reached 15 percent. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 18 percent fair, 59 percent good, and 17 percent excellent. Oats harvested reached 37 percent, a jump of 20 percentage points from last week. Pasture and range condition was rated at 1 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 19 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 14 percent excellent.
