May 9th USDA Illinois Crop Progress and Condition

Cool, wet conditions have slowed corn planting and delayed soybean planting for some producers. Statewide, the average temperature was 57.3 degrees, 1.2 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 0.43 inches, 0.60 inches below normal. There were 2.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 8. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 2 percent short, 72 percent adequate, and 26 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 4 percent short, 79 percent adequate, and 17 percent surplus. Corn planted was at 78 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 56 percent. Corn emerged was at 46 percent, compared to 34 percent last year and the 5-year average of 27 percent. Soybeans planted was at 19 percent. Soybeans emerged was at 1 percent, compared to 7 percent last year. Winter wheat headed jumped to 65 percent, up 36 percentage points from last week. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 30 percent fair, 53 percent good, and 12 percent excellent. Oats planted reached 91 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 85 percent. Pasture and range condition was rated at 2 percent poor, 15 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 25 percent excellent.
