May 2nd Illinois Crop Progress and Condition Report

thRain slowed down planting progress and kept producers out of the field during the past week. Statewide, the average temperature was 58.0 degrees, 1.3 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.64 inches, 0.74 inches above normal. There were 2.4 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 1. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 3 percent short, 71 percent adequate, and 26 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 6 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 17 percent surplus. Corn planted was at 66 percent, up 24 percentage points from last week. Corn emerged was at 25 percent, compared to 11 percent last year and the 5-year average of 12 percent. Soybeans planted was at 9 percent. Winter wheat headed jumped to 29 percent, up 27 percentage points from last week. Winter wheat condition was rated 1 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 54 percent good, and 14 percent excellent. Oats planted reached 90 percent, compared to 87 percent last year. Pasture and range condition was rated at 2 percent poor, 16 percent fair, 61 percent good, and 21 percent excellent.
