May 31st USDA Illinois Crop Progress and Condition Report

thContinued rain is hampering planting in southern Illinois, while warmer temperatures have helped crop emergence in central to northern Illinois. Statewide, the average temperature was 71.9 degrees, 6.5 degrees above normal. Precipitation averaged 1.09 inches, 0.05 inches above normal. There were 4.7 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 29. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 1 percent very short, 5 percent short, 73 percent adequate, and 21 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 3 percent short, 81 percent adequate, and 16 percent surplus. Corn planted was at 94 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 96 percent. Corn emerged was at 87 percent, compared to 92 percent last year and the 5-year average of 86 percent. Corn condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 23 percent fair, 56 percent good, and 15 percent excellent. Soybeans planted was at 72 percent, up 21 percentage points from last week. Soybeans emerged was at 45 percent, compared to 55 percent last year. Soybean condition was rated 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 22 percent fair, 62 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Winter wheat headed was at 94 percent, compared to 93 percent last year. Winter wheat condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 49 percent good, and 9 percent excellent. Oats planted reached 95 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 97 percent. Pasture and range condition was rated at 1 percent very poor, 1 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 60 percent good, and 25 percent excellent.
