May 16th USDA Illinois Crop Progress and Condition

Wet and cool conditions kept producers out of the field for much of the past week. Statewide, the average temperature was 58.8 degrees, 2.9 degrees below normal. Precipitation averaged 2.09 inches, 1.19 inches above normal. There were 1.1 days suitable for fieldwork during the week ending May 15. Topsoil moisture supply was rated at 2 percent short, 67 percent adequate, and 31 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supply was rated at 2 percent short, 77 percent adequate, and 21 percent surplus. Corn planted was at 83 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 76 percent. Corn emerged was at 64 percent, compared to 66 percent last year and the 5-year average of 45 percent. Soybeans planted was at 29 percent. Soybeans emerged was at 10 percent, compared to 13 percent last year. Winter wheat headed was at 80 percent, up 15 percentage points from last week. Winter wheat condition was rated 3 percent very poor, 4 percent poor, 31 percent fair, 51 percent good, and 11 percent excellent. Oats planted reached 93 percent, compared to the 5-year average of 91 percent. Pasture and range condition was rated at 1 percent very poor, 2 percent poor, 13 percent fair, 58 percent good, and 26 percent excellent.
